The Australian Video Rental Retailers Association Limited
The primary aim of the Association is to develop, promote and represent the video industry providing effective service, support and direction for our members. To achieve this goal the Association has a democratically elected Board, [currently 10 people] conducting formal Board meetings on a monthly basis to set the policies and directions it believes will fulfil the Associations aim.
The Association, is the only independent member body representing in excess of 60% of all video libraries in Australia.
The Associations most notable achievement was the Federal Court case against Warner Home Video testing their assertion of copyright of DVD's and other matters. History now records that this victory is a major step forward for all retailers, and has made all distributors take note on how they conduct business with retailers. Two tier pricing would be in Australia today had it not been for the successful court action brought on by the Association
Other past matters that AVRRA has been involved in include the Dawson Committee review, Rental tape depreciation rates, VIPA, State Award negotiations, Pay TV enquiry, reduction of APRA fee structures for AVRA members, GST start up assistance for members, and various Industry Forums.
More recently the Association has tackled head on the important issues of, DVD delamination, replacement policies for damaged stock, small boxes rental VHS, free screenings in the park, Piracy, windows breaches in particular Roadkill, The Lost Battalion and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, Tracker, Disco Pigs and The Transporter,
Currently the Association, on behalf of its members, is mounting a national Pro Rental Campaign to assist members retain their traditional customer base in light of the Foxtel digital launch early in March. The campaign not only just provides in store advertising to stores, it involves a Public Relations campaign to ensure the public is aware of the misleading and false information coming from Foxtel. The Association also referred this misleading and false information to the ACCC in two letters for further investigation.
The Pro Rental campaign is outlined in our latest newsletter and the various media releases that appear on the web site.
